INFINITI is rolling out a new concept car for the New York Auto Show, the INFINITI Q80 Concept Car. The car is promising to literally take your breath away because of its magnificent design that is both modern and unexpected from the INFINITI line. more The Q80 concept started close to 15 months ago, with sketches being drawn to give an INFINITI vehicle a fresh new look. The car comes with a specially designed silver-plated beverage flask that sits on the back of the seat, and is described by the manufacturer as a "design flourish". The Q80 is designed to be three dimensional, with shutters that open up when the car is moving slowly in order to cool the engine down. The shutters close back up when the car is going fast to reduce drag and improve gas mileage. The hood vents are slim decorative, and functional as they also reduce the heat within the engine. The Accusing Stare The Q80 is designed in such a way that the headlights appear to stare at other drivers. Each of the LEDs within the headlights turn higher and lower independently. The lighting itself will adjust to the road in an effort to consistently light the way for the driver, reducing tiredness from driving. The INFINITI Q80 comes with all kinds of technology and feature designs, yet the executive design director Alfonso Albaisa states that the goal was to maintain the ease of interacting with the car and all of the features. The display is easy to operate, and even a passenger can connect to the car's infotainment system using a smartphone. Fun In the Backseat Too For those riding in the backseat, INFINITI doesn't leave them out of the technology action. On the back of both of the front seats is a small touch screen for the use of the passenger seated. The interior of the vehicle is made to give each passenger the feeling as if they are riding in a space all their own. The interior contains both real and synthetic leather, with plenty of polished aluminum, carbon-fiber trim and wood. Add In Some Hybrid Technology The Q80 is also a hybrid vehicle, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 gas engine and an electric motor. Both engines combined are capable of 550 horsepower. The transmission is automatic, and includes 9 speeds. According to INFINITI, the Q80 can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds, and can reach a top speed on the electric motor alone of 155 miles an hour. The Q80 is able to go from the rear wheel drive option to all wheel drive as soon as you need it, and according to INFINITI, the total gas mileage is 43 miles per gallon. While the Q80 is going to auto shows, it isn't quite ready for production. It's a great looking car, and it shows the direction that INFINITI is heading in. The design is meant for the driver, as it focuses on technology that enhances the driving experience and makes it easier to drive safely.

Infiniti is set to release a variable compression four-stroke petrol engine, plus a high-performance “S” line to sit atop all new models. The upcoming QX50 crossover SUV will be deliver the brand a technical breakthrough, becoming the first car in the world with variable-compression engine technology, the technology which could bring about the death of diesel engines in passenger cars. more To be based around an all-new four-cylinder engine, the variable-compression system is claimed by Infiniti to deliver V6 power with four-cylinder diesel fuel economy.It is said by Infiniti to achieve this by changing the engine’s compression ratio depending on the power demand from the driver. The new engine also underscores Infiniti’s new family of S models, which will be the Japanese premium brand’s high-performance family and the naming of which is bound to have Audi (which already has S versions of the A3, the A4, the A6, the A8 and the A7, along with its Q3, Q5 and Q7 SUVs) fuming. “You will find there’s a little red S … And you’ll find that going forward on all our performance vehicles given they have the right engine capacity and performance,” Infiniti boss Roland Krueger stated. Sensors detect the car's driving condition and use the inputs to instantly select the most suitable compression ratio. The displacement of the engine changes and the compression ratio varies between 8:1 for high performance and 14:1 for high efficiency. "The ingenuity of VC-T engine technology lies in its ability to transform itself and seamlessly raise or lower the height the pistons reach," the company said. Compression ratio is the measure of how much the air-fuel mixture is reduced in the engine's cylinders before being ignited to produce power. The variable compression engine paves the way for lower emissions and fuel economy gains. Infiniti is far from the first carmaker to try to use variable compression, with Porsche, Volvo, PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) and Renault all pushing ahead with research, viewing it as a bridging technology between internal combustion engines and electric cars. The concept is effectively to change the swept volume of the engine’s cylinders at top-dead center, delivering the best of both worlds for performance and fuel consumption. It’s also far from new, with British internal-combustion engineering legend Sir Harry Ricardo inventing it in the 1920s. Technology of the day ruled out mass production, but Ricardo’s invention led to his equally pioneering work in fuel quality, which delivered us today’s octane rating system. Saab’s bankruptcy stopped it from delivering on the supercharged variable-compression four-cylinder petrol motor it debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000. Very much a last addition to Saab’s long list of quirky engineering innovations, its engine split the block into two halves, with what was effectively a hinge in the middle lifting one side of the block up to four degrees higher than the other. There are other ideas for achieving the same result, though. Yamaha has worked with two-stroke variable-compression motors since the late 1990, while Lotus’ single-cylinder Omnivore concept used a movable puck at the top of the combustion chamber, Orbital fuel injection and a two-stroke cycle. Its development effectively stopped during the Dany Bahar era. Peugeot’s has a concept dubbed MCE-5, which adjusts the connecting rod’s length via a system that looks fearfully complex, while Dutch engineering outfit Gomecsys has a system it says bolts on to existing crankshafts. One of the more promising and imaginative ways comes from Finland’s Waulis Motors, with the crankshaft attached to an eccentric wheel, which is itself attached to a guidance wheel. But Infiniti is staying quiet on whether it’s developing its own system or working with a concept it has bought in from outside.

It's easy to watch cars drive down the road without thinking about where they've been or where they're going, let alone what they used to look like and how they may look in the future. Every car tells a story — not just the story of the person behind the wheel, but the story of the car itself. While INFINITI is a relatively young brand, our story is one of triumph for the underdog in a competitive luxury landscape. more In the Beginning: 1985 In 1985, many car manufacturers came up with new ideas. Nissan, however, went one step further. The car company created a task force — all very top secret and hush-hush at the time. Their mission, once they chose to accept it, involved coming up with not just a new car, but a new luxury brand with peak performance meant to compete with the luxury models from both the United States and Europe. What's in a Name?: 1987 Two years later, the division and its task force finally had a name: INFINITI. In the 1980s, especially, the innovative spelling created a feeling of speed, whimsy, and freshness. This was but one aim of the new division task force, which had no desire to simply re-brand or makeover an existing automobile. Because the competition at the time was heavy, capturing the hearts, minds, and wanderlust of consumers was essential. This year also marked the creation of the unmistakable INFINITI logo: a badge where two lines in the center go off toward the horizon, pointing toward infinity. The symbolism was not just purposeful, but also attention-grabbing. It was specifically designed to make drivers look forward to the horizon, to imagine the possibilities of driving off into the sunset, and by all accounts, it worked. The Official Launch: 1989 By 1989, the new division launched the INFINITI with over 50 dealers all over the United States. Initially, there were two models available. The INFINITI Q45 was a performance luxury sedan. The INFINITI M30, on the other hand, was more driver-oriented, with the performance coupe offering speed and luxury as well as an enviable driving experience. The division also launched the INFINITI Total Ownership experience, which set the brand apart from its competitors. The Early Success: The '90s Throughout the 1990s, INFINITI steadily gained ground in the automotive industry. Moreover, new models kept coming, creating a line-up of sleek but affordable luxury vehicles that appealed to a variety of budgets. The flagship Q45 evolved with the times, but those changes mainly applied to the interior and exterior designs of the car. The engineering and the performance remained the same. During this period, the INFINITI brand discontinued the M30, though it was speedily replaced with a sporty, compact sedan called the INFINITI G20. The luxurious, dramatic J30 also made its debut during these years, along with the QX4 luxury SUV and the I30/I35, a powerful performance sedan. By the end of its first decade, INFINITI sold approximately 75,000 cars every year. A Member of the Club: 1999 As all car manufacturers know, interest is everything. The smartest course of action is to make drivers feel special, exclusive, and smart for choosing your automobile. Recognizing this, the brand began the INFINITI Owners Club in 1999, which was at once both exclusive and easy to join. The club was an addition to Nissan's existing Total Ownership Package, making drivers feel like they were truly getting the total package when they made the choice to hop into an INFINITI. Changes on the Horizon: 2000 The coming of the millennium marked a variety of changes in the automotive industry, especially in the INFINITI division. It was officially time for a new direction, with an eye toward sportier, more luxurious vehicles. To help with this endeavor, INFINITI merged with Renault, a beloved European brand. The sleek new breed of vehicles born of this merger and the visionary ideas of a particular executive, Carlos Ghosn, were about to change the face of INFINITI. A Smarter Car: The Early '00s In the new millennium, INFINITI introduced intelligent cruise control in their vehicles. The cruise control relied on laser technology to help you maintain a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. The idea was to design cruise controls that helped drivers remain aware of — and respond to — their environments. INFINITI was one of the first brands to use laser technology and rangefinders for this type of safety. That wasn't the only new feature introduced in the new millennium, as 2001 also saw a new rearview monitor in INFINITI vehicles. This technology was a huge game changer in terms of safety and smoother driving. For the first time, INFINITI fans could reverse more easily and with less worry. All it took was a glance at the LCD screen in the dash of the new models, which showed the view behind the car. Continuing with high-tech improvements, 2002 ushered in INFINITI Voice Recognition. Once more, INFINITI was one of the first brands to let drivers control their climate settings, the radio and stereo, and the navigation, simply by telling the car what they wanted. By 2003, these innovations began to pay off in more than increased sales. In January of that year, INFINITI had the honor of making it into Car and Driver's Ten Best Cars twice, thanks to the G35 Sport Sedan and the Sport Coupe. Later, in November, INFINITI was acknowledged as the top winner in growth. Sales of the INFINITI CV topped 100,000 units for the very first time in its history. The Innovations Continue: The Late '00s A Lane Departure Warning function debuted in 2004 to let drivers know if they drifted out of their own lane. The technology debuted in the INFINITI FX, which had a small camera close to the rearview mirror that monitored the car's position as well as the distance between vehicles. Even this technology improved by 2007, which introduced the Around View Monitor. This feature was more advanced than the previous rearview monitor. It allowed drivers to see a 360-degree virtual view of the world right from the dash. The monitor synced with four different cameras dotted around the car, making it easier to reverse, parallel park, and keep an eye on surrounding motorists. That was also the year INFINITI updated its Lane Departure system with Lane Departure Prevention. This was even more powerful, intuitive technology that kept watch ahead, behind, and to the side and compensated for drivers if they drifted out of their lane. The feature even tapped the brakes on its own to guide drivers back to the proper spot. A Blind Spot Intervention System appeared in 2010, taking care of the problematic area of blind spots once and for all. Hydraulic body motion control premiered this year, as well, coupling the size and power of an SUV with the handling of a sedan, thus creating a smooth ride in a sports utility vehicle. In 2012, Back-Up Collision Intervention took over where previous monitoring systems left off and decreased the chances of a reverse collision even more. Nobody knows what the future holds for INFINITI, but based on our history, there's no doubt that it will prove exciting. It's just a matter of time before the next big innovation.

Andrew Jackson's Hermitage The word hermitage indicates a place where a hermit lives, which probably conjures up mental images of unfriendly little dwellings that are almost inaccessible to people. Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, however, is a beautiful mansion on the outskirts of Nashville. The mansion serves as a museum and as a kind of tribute to Andrew Jackson. Visit it to learn more about the man dubbed "the people's president" and to see the beautiful grounds. The museum also hosts events every week, ranging from the historic to the literary and beyond. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg These two towns sit next to each other, and they offer a lot of family friendly activities. Driving your INFINITI between the two is a snap if you want to visit both in one day, or you can stay the night in a number of hotels in one town and head to the adjacent town the next morning. Check out a haunted house or a theater show — or even go bungee jumping. After spending time in the Great Smoky Mountains, a drive down to one or both of these towns is the perfect way to round out your vacation. Dollywood Country fans visiting Pigeon Forge should take a drive over to Dollywood, an amusement park situated in the mountain foothills. Dollywood, which was named for Dolly Parton, is a great stop for families since many of the rides and attractions cater to children. It's also a great way for people from out of state to experience a little bit more country than they get at home. Jack Daniel's Distillery The Jack Daniel's Distillery is in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and it's a can't miss for people 21 and over who love whiskey and history. Jack Daniel's whiskey bottles have become collectors' items over the years, and the brand's long history contains a few mysteries and oddities, which add to the fun of visiting the distillery. Kids can tour the distillery, too, but they obviously can't drink. Tours happen every day between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and once you've done that, take a drive around Moore County, Tennessee's smallest county. Lookout Mountain From Chattanooga, drive up to Lookout Mountain for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Lookout Mountain boasts some truly spectacular scenery; on a clear day, the views seem to go forever. Just a drive up Lookout Mountain is a scenic wonder in and of itself. While you're there, you can visit Ruby Falls, which is the deepest underground cave and waterfall in the U.S. that is accessible to the public. Take a ride on the Incline Railway, the steepest passenger railway in the world. If you drive up the mountain, however, you'll have to ride the railway twice, since it takes you all the way down into Chattanooga. Graceland No list of Tennessee attractions is complete without a Graceland mention, and you should go even if you're not a particular Elvis fan. It's Tennessee's most popular tourist attraction for good reason, since it celebrates one of the world's most legendary musicians and is full of intriguing Americana. Elvis Presley's mansion itself is a museum, where you get a deep look into his Memphis life. Other museums and exhibits are available on the grounds as well, and once you're done in Graceland, you can check out some great music in Memphis.
